Greiner has not played during his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Toledo since Thursday, his second game for the Mud Hens. He had been placed on the 10-day injured list May 12 using a left hamstring strain.
“Grayson had a small discomfort a few days ago when he playedwhen he ran around the bases,” Hinch said Sunday. “He has been extended a few days off to have any of the soreness subside. He initially was going to play with this weekend. It does not seem like he’s going to get back there for a few days.”
With Jake Rogers and Eric Haase acting well, the organization does not need to hurry Greiner straight back from his injury. Once Greiner is wholesome, the Tigers should determine whether to leave him Triple-A or deliver him back into the majors. Hinch can also be without catcher Wilson Ramos, on the 10-day injured list with a lumbar spine strain.
Greiner played 14 matches for the Tigers prior to his injury, hitting .247 with one home run, five RBIs, 1 walk and 16 strikeouts. In two matches for Toledo, he went 2-for-5 with one dual.
“I wouldn’t officially call it a setback nonetheless, but it was a delay,” Hinch said. “We are attempting to be certain that we do not push him too quickly, too hard”
Adding Rony Garcia to taxi squad
The Tigers will include right-hander Rony Garcia, now in Triple-A Toledo, into the taxi squad for the upcoming road trip. With righty Jose Urena on the 10-day injured record , the team Requires a starter for Monday’s competition with the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
Whether the Tigers trigger Garcia to Begin Monday depends on the bullpen from Sunday’s series finale with all the New York Yankees. If the bullpen is not heavily taxed, Hinch said to anticipate one of 3 left-handers — Tyler Alexander, Derek Holland or Daniel Norris — to start the bullpen-only game against the Brewers.
“(The Yankees are) likely to have an all-purpose lineup now,” Hinch said. “They’ll have some left-handed bench guys, so I will visit our right-handed bullpen being greatly used again now, which leads me into the likely left-handed newcomer for tomorrow.
“Even with the left handed starter tomorrow, it is likely to be a bullpen day any way you look at it”
Garcia, 23, has a 3.20 ERA, 10 walks and 24 strikeouts across 192/3 innings in four starts for the Mud Hens. He pitched 21 innings for the Tigers at 2020 as a Rule 5 draft pick, registering an 8.14 ERA, nine walks and 14 strikeouts.
Willi Castro’s assurance
Second baseman Willi Castro is attempting to remain positive throughout his third season in the majors (106 games complete ).
But 2021 isn’t going as intended .
“I know that I am unable,” Castro said. “The guys which are playing feel great. We just want to win. I know I’m going to receive my opportunity. I will keep fighting. Hopefully, I get back to playing daily.”
He included a leading diving play — with a strong throw from the ground — in second base, carrying one away from DJ LeMahieu. He helped execute a double play and didn’t make any mistakes.
Castro has not made a defensive mistake since May 1.
“Willi can perform at this level. Willi can handle the position. Plays such as this, days like this, when he goes home feeling pretty good about himself, maybe that is the secret to spring him to enjoying a little more consistently, both for me personally as his boss putting him in the lineup but also because of him. Contributing to wins, there’s not a lot better sense at this level”
Joe Jimenez’s development
He also surrendered a one-out walk into Gary Sanchez but struck Mike Ford glancing at fastball and obtained Miguel Andujar to pop up into second base to secure the win.
