Four years ago Monday, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry had the highest-scoring game of his NBA career, tallying 54 points after an 11-of-13 shooting performance from 3-point range against the New York Knicks.
A year ago Monday, Curry scored 46 points and tied what was then an NBA record with 12 3-pointers, including the game-winner from a couple of steps in front of half court with less than a second to play against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Entering Monday night, Curry had 34 3-pointers on Feb. 27, which, according to Elias Sports Bureau research, is the most on any date in his career. He entered the day shooting 74 percent (34-of-46) from 3-point range on this date.
But against the 76ers, Curry’s 3-point shot was nowhere to be found. He finished 0-of-11, matching the NBA record for most missed 3-pointers without a make in a game. He shares it with Antoine Walker (2001-02 Boston Celtics) and Trey Burke (2014-15 Utah Jazz).
Oh brother
Curry’s brother, Seth, scored 29 points for the Dallas Mavericks against the Miami Heat on Monday. That included the go-ahead 3-pointer as part of a game-ending 12-0 run. It was the second-highest scoring game of his career, surpassed by only the 31 points he scored Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Seth made five 3-pointers, one shy of his career high.
According to Elias research, the Curry brothers have played on the same day 53 times. Seth has outscored Stephen in three of those games.
Not moving up the record books just yet
Curry entered the game with 1,824 3-pointers, three shy of Kobe Bryant for 11th all-time. The 0-of-11 lowered his career 3-point percentage to 43.9 percent. After Monday’s performance, he could miss 1,378 consecutive 3-pointers and still have a higher 3-point percentage than Bryant (whose percentage at retirement was 32.9).
And yet the Warriors still won
The Warriors defeated the Philadelphia 76ers on the strength of 62 points in the paint, tied for their second-most in a game this season. They made 17 shots on cuts to the basket, matching their season high. They also set a season high for points off drives with 24.
The Warriors went 33-of-39 from the free throw line, matching their most free throws in a game this season.
What’s next?
Curry and the Warriors face the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. Earlier this season, Curry had a similar game to Monday, going 0-of-10 from 3-point range against the Los Angeles Lakers. He followed that with 46 points against the New Orleans Pelicans in his next game, including an NBA-record 13 3-pointers.
In his past four games against the Wizards, Curry is averaging 33.3 points and is shooting 68 percent (27-of-40) from 3-point range. That includes a 51-point game with 11 3-pointers in February 2016.
