Today marks the end of an era for me. This column is my final goodbye to the sport that has been my life – Rugby League. My name is Garry Schofield, and I have some news to share.
In March 2023, I received a devastating diagnosis – brain damage. It’s a condition that has affected me deeply, with symptoms like headaches, migraines, forgetfulness, anxiety, and lack of concentration becoming a part of my daily life. The journey to this diagnosis started back in December 2019 when I underwent an operation for a detached retina in my left eye. Despite multiple surgeries and laser procedures, the pressure in my eye remained dangerously high, leading to further complications.
The toll of these health issues has been immense, affecting not only me but also my loved ones. My partner, Alison, has taken on the role of my caregiver as I navigate the challenges that come with my condition. There have been moments of darkness and despair, but I am grateful for the support and love that surrounds me.
Reflecting on my career in Rugby League, I am filled with pride and gratitude. From my early days at Clapgate Middle School to playing for professional teams like Hull FC, Leeds, and Huddersfield, I have cherished every moment on the field. Captaining Great Britain and going on Lions tours were highlights of my career, alongside playing with legendary teammates and against formidable opponents like Wally Lewis and Brett Kenny.
As I bid farewell to this chapter of my life, I want to express my gratitude to the fans, coaches, teammates, and journalists who have been a part of my journey. Your support and camaraderie have meant the world to me, and I am forever thankful for the memories we have shared.
While the decision to step away from Rugby League is a difficult one, I know that my health must come first. The road ahead may be uncertain, but I am hopeful for the future and look forward to spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren, as they grow and thrive.
As I close this chapter and say goodbye to the sport that has shaped me, I want to leave you with the words of my late father that have guided me throughout my career – “Don’t you worry about anybody, son, let them worry about you.” With those words in mind, I take my leave from Rugby League with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit ready for whatever lies ahead. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the love. Goodbye, Rugby League.
