Angelique Kerber is eliminated early in the grass classic in Wimbledon and, unlike Tatjana Maria, misses the leap into the round of 16 of the tennis tournament. The mother of two, Maria, on the other hand, achieved the greatest success of her career – and couldn’t stop cheering.
Angelique Kerber was eliminated in Wimbledon in the third round. The 2018 tournament winner missed a 5:3 lead in the second set in a 4:6, 5:7 against Belgian Elise Mertens and thus missed following Jule Niemeier (Dortmund) and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) into the round of 16.
For Kerber, the tournament is over earlier than expected. Disappointed, she trudged over Court 1’s shoulders with a Wimbledon towel. After two easy wins, the 34-year-old lacked conviction, and in the second round she wasn’t even able to use a break advantage twice. Last year, Kerber reached the semi-finals.
This time she never found her best lawn tennis throughout the game. The German number one made far too many unforced errors and double faults. The Belgian also lost in the second set, but Kerber missed good chances to win the set and win the game in a third. In the end she even took the 5:3 lead by losing four games in a row.
Maria, on the other hand, surprised the tennis world and, with all her experience, conjured up a brilliant performance on the holy lawn against the Greek Maria Sakkari. Just 15 months after the birth of her second daughter, she reached the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time. “There are no words for it, only the sheer joy that I can experience this with my family,” said Maria, full of happiness after the surprising 6: 3, 7: 5 against Sakkari, number five on the seeding list. In the exuberance of feelings, she sent a declaration of love to her husband and two children from the seat. Maria (34) is dealing with the former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia.
