Day was a master at lag putting and had five putts that were over 10 feet. This included a 36-footer for birdie on the par-3 fifth.
Day’s revival play is a positive development for fans of Day, a 33-year old Aussie who has suffered from back issues and hasn’t won on Tour since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. Day’s best result this season so far is T7 at both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and Vivint Houston Open. Former World No. The former World No. 1 is now ranked at 71st, and did not qualify for last week’s U.S. Open.
However, this week was a completely different story. Day’s success can be attributed in large part to his flatstick — which he recently switched for an older model.
Day stated that he tried the SIK putter, but he was more comfortable with something that felt “squarer to him”. Day finished his round on Friday. I was staring down at my putter and it wasn’t aligning correctly. I felt a bit closed to myself. That was a cross — I didn’t trust my line and crossed myself up. Now, going back to [TaylorMade] Spider which is a bit more open for my eyes, I can trust that the line I’m aiming towards is accurate.
Day said, “And then just coming back to the feelings again.” It’s great to be able again to see a ball in the hole, instead of wondering if I’m going to hole it.
Day’s 2018 win was not without a Spider. He will be attempting to recreate the magic of Day’s last win in 2018.
He is certainly on the right track.
