The Jets were awarded a compensatory draft pick by the NFL on Thursday. The pick is at the end of the third round, the 107th pick overall.
The NFL released the list of compensatory picks, which is based on a formula dealing with free agents lost and signed the year before. For the Jets, the losses of Damon Harrison, Demario Davis and Chris Ivory factored in, as well as their signings of Matt Forte and Steve McLendon.
The Jets now have seven draft picks. The have one pick in the first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds, and two in the third. The Jets traded their fourth-round pick to the Redskins during last year’s draft in order to move up and draft tackle Brandon Shell in the fifth round.
The Giants were not awarded any compensatory picks. That is not a surprise after their spending spree in free agency last year. The Giants did find out their fourth-round pick drops from No. 130 to No. 140 overall as a result of the discipline they received for using walkie-talkies during a game.
One wrinkle this year is that compensatory picks can be traded. This is the first year that is the case.
The Bengals, Browns, Broncos and Chiefs were all awarded four compensatory picks. The Dolphins were given three.
