Joachim Low said that he would make a late decision about Thomas Muller’s fitness. Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane are still waiting to replace Germany against Hungary.
Germany will advance to the Euro 2020 knockout stage, if they win against Hungary on Wednesday night’s final group match at Allianz Arena.
They may have to do the job without Muller, who was the inspiration for their 4-2 win over Portugal on matchday 2. Low revealed that Muller had been out of training the past few days because of a knock.
What has been said?
Low also said that Lucas Klostermann, RB Leipzig’s full-back, is a doubt for the Hungary match.
“Our medical staff had a lot to do in the last two days, but all those players, such as Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan trained with us during the final training session.
“Only Thomas Muller and Lucas Klostermann could not do it. Thomas Muller will be waiting, he will take another test in the morning, while the rest of the players will train at the hotel.
“And we’ll see and decide if Thomas Muller will be available or not.”
Sane & Goretzka will fight for Muller’s spot
If Muller is unable to make it, his Bayern Munich teammate Sane will step in.
“Leroy is eager to play. Low was very pleased with the performance of the winger in training. He has made significant improvements in certain areas over the last year. Leroy will be there if he gets the chance.”
Goretzka, who also plays at club level with Bayern, is now in contention after his second-half return from injury against Portugal.
Low said of the 26-year old: “He makes an impression in training, very energetic. He’s ready, I believe.
The larger picture
Germany will suffer a major loss if Muller is absent from the crucial Group F encounter. Muller, who has scored 39 goals in 104 games for Germany to date after slipping back into the international fold effortlessly after a two year exile, will be a huge loss.
Low has many options, but Germany will likely be able to take on a Hungarian team that lost 3-0 against Portugal in their first game, before drawing 1-1 with France, the world champions.
