A month ago, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund agreed on the change of superstar Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker leaves the Ruhrpott after 89 competitive games and 86 goals. Now Pep Guardiola’s club is making the change official.
Now the mega transfer has officially taken place. Superstar Erling Haaland is a Manchester City player as of July 1, 2022. The Norwegian signed a contract with coach Pep Guardiola’s club until 2027. Borussia Dortmund had to let the striker go for just 75 million euros due to an exit clause in the contract. There has been an agreement on the transfer for a long time.
“This is a proud day for me and my family,” said Haaland in his first interview for Manchester City. “I’ve always admired City, especially over the last few years. They play exciting football, create a lot of chances and of course that makes them perfect for my game. There are so many world-class players in the squad and Pep is one of the greatest coaches of all time . I think I’m in the right place to make my dreams come true.”
Erling is not the first Haaland at Manchester City. He is following in the footsteps of his father Alfie, who was hired in the English working-class town almost 22 years ago. There he quickly became the darling of the public, but soon had to end his career due to a knee injury. Shortly before joining City in the summer of 2000, his son Erling was born in Leeds.
And so the future Pep Guardiola player also showed up twice in the Manchester City jersey when he was presented on social media. Once as a teenager, who wore the colors of his father’s former club from an early age, and once as the Haaland that he is today. The player who is one of football’s most coveted stars.
“I was born in England,” Haaland explained. “I’ve been a City fan all my life. I know so much about the club and I feel a little bit at home here.” At home, that has been Borussia Dortmund since his move in January 2020, which he also said goodbye to on social media at the weekend and which he is leaving with impressive numbers. He scored 86 goals in just 89 competitive games. Figures by which he will have to be measured in the future.
“Erling is a great talent and he’s been one of the best strikers in Europe for the past few seasons,” said Txiki Begiristain, Citizens’ sporting director. “He’s only 21 years old, his best years are still ahead of him and we’re confident that Pep will make it even better.”
