A young Australian soccer player has died after suffering a brain haemorrhage resulting from an “unfortunate” collision during a community club match, played on Saturday in the city of Adelaide, various sources reported Monday.
Antonio Loiacono, 20, who played for Birdwood Football Club against the local team Gumeracha, was knocked unconscious after the hard crash and was airlifted to a hospital in Adelaide, the capital of the South Australian region.
However, the young man did not resist his injuries and died on Sunday night.
“The doctor had told us that his brain pressure and bleeding were going to increase and in less than 24 hours he would be brain dead,” the player’s brother, Jack Loiacono, told local television channel 7.
The Great Southern Football League (GSFL) expressed on its Facebook page its “sincere condolences” on Monday to the young man’s family and friends, as well as members and supporters of the Birdwood Football Club for the “unfortunate incident on the pitch”, which occurred on the first matchday of this season for most of the clubs.
In this context, the head of government of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, stressed in statements collected by the public channel ABC that the death of Loiacono is “a horrible start to the season” for Australian football players – more similar to rugby than to football and that it is the most popular sport in the oceanic country.
