Grayson Allen got a taste of his own medicine Tuesday night, as he tangled with an opponent’s leg and flew headfirst onto the hardwood floor.
This particular opponent, Florida State guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes, had a personal incentive to take out college basketball’s most-wanted serial tripper, whether he did it intentionally or not. Rathan-Mayes was one of Allen’s earliest victims in what became an alarming trend of deliberate trips that carried over into a disgraced junior season for the Duke All-American.
On Tuesday, during the No. 17 Blue Devil’s 75-70 win over the Seminoles, Allen tried stepping over a fallen Rathan-Mayes following a Duke rebound and appeared to catch the redshirt freshman’s foot before flailing to the ground.
When the two teams met last season on Feb. 25, Allen suspiciously extended his left leg behind him while Rathan-Mayes started to break for the in-bounds pass, causing him to fall directly to the court. Allen, who was whistled on the play, then held his hands up to the referee in disbelief without helping Rathan-Mayes up.
Two months after Allen was suspended one game for repeated offenses, Tuesday’s debatable run-in reminds us how many enemies he’s likely made along the way.
