Contact with the German embassy has already been established if fans have to remain in custody: RB Leipzig supporters experience encroaching security forces at the Champions League away game in Warsaw. The club condemned the incidents and lodged a complaint.
Fans and clubs have sharply criticized what they consider to be unjustified strict admission controls before RB Leipzig’s Champions League game in Warsaw. Fans described on Twitter that women almost had to undress and that minors “were groped intensely in the intimate area without cause”. The club confirmed that. As a consequence, the active fan scene decided to dismantle the choreography planned for the game against Shakhtar Donetsk. In addition, the fan banners were hung upside down in the Wojska Polskiego stadium as a sign of protest.
“We condemned this form of controls and have already lodged a complaint with UEFA about what we believe to be the harsh admission procedure,” said RB after the clear win against Donetsk, describing the admission controls as “disproportionate”. After initial checks by a security service, the police are said to have taken over. Among other things, fans are said to have been “shone in their underwear with a flashlight”, according to an RB message.
In addition, several fans were asked to “take off their scarves during the controls”. According to the club, they were not allowed to resume this after the controls. “Two people were also taken into custody as part of the controls,” as RB confirmed. The club is already in contact with the German embassy in Warsaw – “in case these RBL fans have to stay in Warsaw overnight,” it said. The “Bild” quotes the press spokesman of the Ukrainian top club, they “are examining the allegations, but can’t say anything more specific at the moment.”
Leipzig advanced to the round of 16 of the Champions League with a 4-0 (1-0) win over Donetsk. Shakhtar plays his home games in the premier class in Warsaw because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The Saxons progressed second in Group F behind holders Real Madrid, while Donetsk are relegated to the Europa League in third place.
