The Lyonnaises are rolling. Still undefeated this season in all competitions, the footballers of Olympique Lyonnais (OL) largely won 7 goals to 0, Thursday January 25, on the field of the Austrian club Sankt Pölten during the fifth and penultimate day of the group stage of the Champions League.
Already assured of being qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition, OL took the opportunity to secure first place in their group, while their evening opponents occupied last place in the standings and were eliminated.
The Austrians, although first in their national championship, showed themselves to be very inferior. A few figures illustrate OL’s show of strength: 43 shots to 0, 78 attacks to 3, and 13 corners to 0.
Double by Ada Hegerberg
Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg scored twice for her team’s first and third goals (21st, 36th) while Sarah Däbritz had scored, in the meantime, the second (22nd). In the second half, Lyon was effective from a set point. Vanessa Gilles scored following a corner played by Selma Bacha (55th) as did Dzsenifer Marozsan (79th). Entering at the end of the match, Kadidiatou Diani scored the sixth goal by taking a cross from Amel Majri (83rd) before Dabritz scored the seventh with a shot into the top corner (87th).
Vanessa Gilles and Eugénie Le Sommer also shot at the uprights (29, 60). OL must still host Slavia Prague on January 31 at Groupama stadium, a Czech club that the Lyonnaises beat 9-0 in the first leg.
On Wednesday, the Paris Saint-Germain women’s team took a big step towards the quarter-finals by beating Ajax Amsterdam (3-1) during this fifth day of the group stage thanks to a double from its star Marie- Antoinette Katoto. The other Parisian team in the running, Paris FC, which is new to the Champions League this season, drew (0-0) in Sweden against BC Häcken, and maintained its hope of qualifying for the final day. Gaëtane Thiney’s teammates, third in their group, no longer have their destiny entirely in their hands, and will play for their place in the quarter-final at home next Wednesday against Chelsea.
