Heringsdorf (dpa/mv) – In connection with a series of fires, the police arrested a suspect in Heringsdorf on Usedom. The 63-year-old was caught near a set fire on Wednesday evening as he tried to run away, a police spokesman said on Thursday. Shortly before, there had been three fires within a short period of time. For example, fires were set in an old people’s home being renovated, a snack bar and a shed – all within a radius of 500 meters in the well-known Baltic Sea resort. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.
The suspect was German, it said. Nobody got hurt. The damage to property in these cases has so far been estimated at 20,000 euros. In the past few months, there had been several fires in the north and south of the island of Usedom. Therefore, the police are also examining a connection with other fires on the island.
A storage shed of a rifle club in the city of Usedom went up in flames last weekend. Previously, on February 8th, the roof box at the back of a restaurant in the Baltic Sea resort of Heringsdorf had burned. Arson is also suspected here. In this case, the damage was estimated at a five-digit sum.
