One device instead of many books: E-book readers are particularly useful when travelling. Stiftung Warentest rated most of the devices in the test as “good”. What you need to know about this.
E-book readers are particularly useful on vacation: With them, travelers can read lots of stories without having to lug around heavy books. Stiftung Warentest tested them. Seven of the eight devices tested received the grade “good” from Stiftung Warentest. This is shown by a study in the current magazine “test” (05/2022). The tested e-book readers cost between 79 and 430 euros.
If you want to buy an e-book reader, you first have to decide between two worlds: the Kindle devices from Amazon or the e-readers from Kobo, Pocketbook and Tolino.
Amazon: The US company offers a lot of convenience, but seals off its users: you can almost only buy e-books from Amazon, you cannot pass on copy-protected titles and you cannot borrow books from public libraries either. According to the testers, those who choose the Amazon system are less flexible. Because the Kindle devices from Amazon could not open the Epub format in the test, which public libraries often use. That’s why they only got the grade “good” despite the top battery life.
Kobo, Pocketbook and Tolino: The competition offers more freedom: The copy protection is not as strict – unlike Kindle, customers of these platforms can often pass on eBooks in a private context. It is also possible to borrow books from libraries.
The battery life of the electronic readers is usually long, with normal use they often last several weeks. Nevertheless, the battery life of the readers in our test differed greatly: the average reading time per battery charge was between 13 and 133 hours.
At the top – with a grade of 1.7 – were: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2021 (around 130 euros), Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2021 (around 190 euros), Tolino Vision 6 (just under 170 euros), Kobo Elipsa (around 430 euros) and Kobo Sage (about 290 euros).
Tip: Classics and works by unknown authors are often also available free of charge – for example in the Weltbild and Hugendubel online shops.
