A concept and prototype of Sony’s Xperia projector was first revealed at MWC 2016 but little information was given about the device. A year later Sony introduced the Xperia Touch, a projector that turns any flat surface into a touchscreen, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Monday.
The gadget turns surfaces into a 23-inch HD touchscreen and works horizontally or vertically. A video released by Sony showing how the Xperia Touch works shows how fast and the touchscreen responds to physical touch.
The Xperia Touch, which supports Wi-Fi, uses Sony’s SXRD projection display technology. The touch commands are made possible through infrared light and real-time detection via its built-in 13-megapixels camera, at a rate of 60 frames-per-second.
The innovative projector allows users to play games, watch videos online and communicate using messaging apps and social networks. The Xperia Touch projector has a home screen designed to be accessible in dark or bright environments. The home screen provides real-time weather information, a memo board for doodles or video notes, calendar access and a Skype portal for video chat.
The interactive android projector is compatible with the PlayStation 4 Remote Play1. The projector, which runs on Google, will run any app or game downloaded from the Google Play Store.
The Xperia Touch comes with two-way stereo speakers and USB Type-C and micro HDMI ports. It also has proximity sensing, which allows the Xperia Touch to automatically turn on when it senses someone near the projector. The device itself isn’t bulky and doesn’t take much space. It has a 69 x 134 x 143 mm dimension and weighs 932g
The Xperia Touch projector will be released in Europe through select retailers and the Xperia Store Online in some countries this spring. A release date for the U.S. has not been specified as of yet. The projector will be priced at €14993.
