The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 are an absolutely successful further development. The wireless ANC earphones sound at least as good as their predecessors, but offer even more comfort and useful additional functions.
Sennheiser took two years to release the third generation of its wireless ANC earphones. The wait was worth it, because the new plugs not only offer excellent sound like their predecessors, but also some welcome improvements. The only step backwards that Sennheiser made was the price.
The Momentum True Wireless 3 are not just a new edition, but an extensive further development with numerous changes, not only in detail. It starts with the chic charging case, which is slightly higher and deeper but narrower than its predecessors. In addition, the USB-C port has moved to the front, making it easier to keep an eye on the charge status LED.
When you open the box, you see completely new earphones, which no longer have a round basic shape, but a cubic design like the cheaper CX offshoots. The ergonomically shaped surface on the ear has become slightly smaller, which means that the plugs, which are protected against splash water according to IPX4, are a little more comfortable to wear. Nevertheless, they also sit more securely because the Momentum True Wireless 3 have additional silicone rings and retaining wings. They are available in different sizes and if you don’t need them also with fully clipped wings.
In a direct comparison, the Momentum True Wireless 3 seem to sound even better than their predecessors. This may be due to a fine-tuned set-up, but it could also be due to the improved seat. Either way, the sound is a pleasure: powerful but not exaggerated basses form the foundation for broad mids, which are perfectly complemented by crystal-clear trebles with many details. The sound is rich but airy, the stage wide but clearly defined.
As usual from Sennheiser, the overall sound is neutral. However, the recently completely overhauled Smart Connect app offers the possibility of making individual adjustments. This also includes sound profiles that can be created with a simple listening test. With Bluetooth 5.2, the earphones not only support more lossless codes such as AAC or aptX, but also aptX Adaptive. This means there is almost no latency, which is very important when playing games or videos.
The active noise cancellation of the earphones is also adaptive. This means that it automatically adapts to the environment. That works pretty well. In the office or on walks in a quiet environment, the function is audibly restrained, but it does its best in loud traffic, on the bus or on the train. This is very effective, especially with deeper, permanent background noise, and even with quieter music you hardly notice the ambient noise. Very good: The Momentum True Wireless 3 offer a separate setting for wind noise.
If it really matters, for example for announcements, you can activate a transparency mode with a tap of your finger. The earphones also offer a strong performance during telephone calls, in which the ambient noise is also effectively filtered and your own voice is heard clearly and clearly by the person you are talking to.
To activate the anti-wind function, you have to open the app. Otherwise, you can regulate practically everything via the precisely working touch control. In an exemplary manner, Sennheiser enables users to individually specify what should happen after one, two, three or one long tap.
With a running time of up to seven hours, the earphones have a very good endurance, the charging box offers reserves of around 21 hours. After about 1.5 hours in the case, the empty plugs are fully charged again, 15 minutes are enough for an hour of music enjoyment.
All in all, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 are among the best wireless ANC earphones you can currently buy, and they definitely sound great. In addition, they offer a high level of comfort, many successful extras and great endurance. Because at around 250 euros they are also 50 euros cheaper than their predecessors, they also offer an attractive price-performance ratio.
