Minister of Defence Ursula von Leyen (CDU) praised asylum compromise. The result creates “order at border but retains clear European idea”, she said in a conversation with foreign journalists. The question of planned, so-called transit centres and administrative agreements with countries from which people would come would be in line with European spirit. “It was a hard and difficult road, but bottom line is that we have made a big step forward.”
Pro Asylum managing director Günter Burkhardt had referred to transit centres as “Haftlager in no Man’s Land”. SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil and deputy party chairman Malu Dreyer and Ralf Steger spoke out against closed transit centres. “We don’t want refugee families behind guarded fences,” wrote Steger on Twitter. Klingbeil said in daily mes of ARD, he prefers “no red lines”. The SPD, however, will also not simply wave through.

The SPD internal politician Burkhard Lischka said in German radio that open transit centres are sufficient. Closed centres were in danger of being illegal. Rapid procedures are also possible without closed centres. The SPD has a clear position to “not build a Haftlager”.
Kramp-cart builder wants to rework union dispute
CDU and CSU want to establish transit centres for refugees at German-Austrian border. From re, asylum seekers whose proceedings are under jurisdiction of anor EU State shall be returned to that state if re are appropriate agreements. In facilities, people should remain only a few days until a repatriation. The SPD had rejected 2015 such institutions as “detention centres”. At that time, however, re were thousands of people crossing border, today only a few cases.

In opinion of CDU general secretary Annegret Kramp, asylum dispute has left deep marks in relationship between CDU and CSU. “There will be some work to be done,” she said to Saarbrücken newspaper. She hopes “that everyone has his teachings” draw from what happened. The relationship between CDU and CSU had never been free of tension, “but this was a real exceptional situation.” When asked wher personal relationship between Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) was still to be cemented, Kramp-cart builder said that “both of m must answer for mselves”. People expected that y would do ir job. Both of m would know, and y will be able to do so.
Merkel always insisted that re should be no unilateral action at border with neighbouring countries. “The CSU has gone from such an uncoordinated solution; That made agreement possible, “said Kramp-cart-maker.
Union Bundestag group chief Volker Kauder called on CDU and CSU for better work and less controversy. “A number of things have been achieved, such as restriction of family recoveries for eligible refugees. The Baukindergeld is bagged. But we have to be better, “he said to Rhenish post. With a view to weeks-long debate on refugee policy, Bundestag group chief stressed: “We should not be able to afford such a quarrel in union again”.
