Minister of Defence Ursula von Leyen (CDU) praised asylum compromise. The result creates “order at border but retains clear European idea”, she said in a conversation with foreign journalists. The question of planned, so-called transit centres and administrative agreements with countries from which people would come would be in line with European spirit. “It was a hard and difficult road, but bottom line is that we have made a big step forward.”
Pro Asylum managing director Günter Burkhardt had referred to transit centres as “Haftlager in no Man’s Land”. SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil and deputy party chairman Malu Dreyer and Ralf Steger spoke out against closed transit centres. “We don’t want refugee families behind guarded fences,” wrote Steger on Twitter. The SPD internal politician Burkhard Lischka said in German radio that open transit centres are sufficient. Closed centres were in danger of being illegal. Rapid procedures are also possible without closed centres. The SPD has a clear position to “not build a Haftlager”.

In opinion of CDU general secretary Annegret Kramp, asylum dispute has left deep marks in relationship between CDU and CSU. “There will be some work to be done,” she said to Saarbrücken newspaper.
