The US wants to maintain its previous troop strength in South Korea despite rapprochement policy with North Korea. This was announced by US Secretary of Defense James Mattis at a meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Song Young Moo. His country’s commitment to South Korea remains “iron,” said Mattis. This also includes maintaining current troop strengths. The US government will use all of its diplomatic and military capabilities to meet this commitment. The United States currently has 28,500 soldiers in South Korea.

Mattis had hit song during a short stopover on his way from China to Japan. In his words, he sent a soothing message to South Korea after a joint military exercise planned for summer was cancelled in short term. Previously, US president Donald Trump promised North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at ir Singapore summit that exercise would be canceled.
In early June, North Korea’s head of state Kim Jong-un and US President Donald met for first time and made a historic agreement from point of view of US government. Kim Jong-Un reaffirmed his willingness to denuclear his country, while Trump announced that he would stop joint military manoeuvres with South Korea in region. According to Ministry of Defence in Seoul and Pentagon, exercise planned for August, in which 17,500 US soldiers were to take part, was cancelled. No decisions have yet been taken on furr manoeuvres.
