Friday’s announcement comes at a time when Pakistan has intensified its vaccination campaign to combat the spread of the new omicron variant.

Asad Umar, Planning Minister, took to Twitter to express gratitude to the health workers who helped him reach his goal.

Pakistan has given 155 million COVID-19 vaccination doses since last year. This vaccinated more than 70 million South Asian citizens of approximately 220 million. This brings the overall vaccination rate up to 44%.

Pakistan has largely relied on Chinese vaccines so far, but it has also received millions of vaccines through the COVAX program.
