One man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after an alleged drunken driver struck them while they were changing a damaged tire in the middle of an East Side street after a minor accident.
The man, 57, pulled to the middle lane after his truck collided with a car in the 300 block of South W.W. White Road at about 7:15 p.m., according to police and witnesses at the scene.
Stephanie Woods, 47, was in the car involved in the initial accident and said the man was working on his vehicle while they waited for police.
“We had a small accident and it turned in to something really, really big,” Woods said, noting they waited at the scene for almost an hour for police to arrive.
Shortly Favoribahis after 8 p.m., an SUV struck the man and his friend as they were working on the truck, police said.
Woods said she had called at 8:04 p.m. for a case number, and that moments later the man was hit.
“(The man) was hit and already dying, and they came within 10 minutes,” Woods said.
The man died at the scene while the woman was taken to University Hospital in critical condition, police confirmed.
“The other lady said she couldn’t feel her legs,” Woods recalled when she ran to check on her and the man.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene, but he was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, police said.
“Traumatic. I’m all over the place,” Woods said. “I’m sad for the other guy and for his family.”
