Würzburg (dpa / lby) – According to climate researcher Heiko Paeth from the University of Würzburg, climate protection does not work on the basis of incentives and voluntariness. In Germany and Europe there must finally be legally binding framework conditions for climate protection measures, Paeth told the “Main-Post” (Saturday). For decades, politicians have deliberately delayed this.
Every avoided carbon monoxide or methane molecule helps, no matter where in the world. “But the major savings potential lies with us, not in the countries of the Global South. And not because it’s easier, but because we are responsible for many more emissions.”
According to Paeth, the roofs of parking lots in large supermarkets should be fitted with photovoltaic systems, as should noise protection walls on motorways, roads and rail traffic. He would not exclude listed buildings either.
“We need a mixture of climate protection to prevent the worst and climate adaptation to adapt to a scenario that we can no longer prevent,” the scientist told the newspaper. Climate change can no longer be averted.
At the world climate conference in Egypt, representatives from almost 200 countries are currently discussing how the fight against global warming can be stepped up. The conference runs until November 18th.
