Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – Frankfurt’s deselected Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann must finally vacate his seat: This Friday (1 p.m.) the municipal election committee will determine the final result of the referendum, so the SPD politician will also leave his place at the end of the day Government office. His previous deputy, Mayor Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg (Greens), will take over until the new elections in March. Also on Friday, the Frankfurt SPD wants to present its proposal for a new mayor candidate.

On Sunday, Feldmann was voted out of office by the people of Frankfurt with a clear vote. According to the preliminary final result, 95.1 percent of the participating voters voted against him. The successor is expected to be elected on March 5th. City councilors will vote on the proposed date next week.

Former mayor and treasurer Uwe Becker is to run for the CDU. On November 19, the Frankfurt Greens want to discuss the question of who to put up as a candidate.

Feldmann has had to answer to a corruption trial before the Frankfurt district court since October. It is about his close ties to Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo). Feldman denies the allegations. In addition, the 64-year-old gambled away sympathy through various slip-ups, for example when he accepted the trophy at Eintracht’s European Cup celebrations. Since the summer at the latest, almost all parties have called for his resignation, even his own party, the SPD.
