Schwerin (dpa / mv) – The Bundeswehr in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to strengthen homeland security in the country through regionalization in the future. “I would like to advance the further development of our territorial mission in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a focus on homeland security,” said Brigadier General Uwe Nerger in Schwerin on Thursday.
Part of this project is the establishment of two new homeland security companies with up to 120 reservists. According to a spokesman, the three units will then be located in Schwerin, Parow and Neubrandenburg. The Bundeswehr hopes that this will make training and regular operations easier by being closer to home. In addition, however, adapting the content of homeland security to the challenges of hybrid warfare is also part of the process. This is about protecting the digital infrastructure of the Bundeswehr.
On Saturday, the renaming of the previous company to “Heimatschutzkompanie Mecklenburg” and the reorganization of the companies “Vorpommern” and “Ostsee” will be officially announced. The occasion is the 67th anniversary of the founding of the Bundeswehr, for which a ceremony is planned from 2 p.m. in Schwerin’s Marienplatz gallery.
Homeland security companies are trained both for civil support – such as in the case of natural disasters – and for any combat missions. According to the head of the state command, interested citizens can contact the Bundeswehr directly if they have any questions.
