The plane had taken off from Olbia, in Sardinia, on Monday August 21 at the end of the afternoon, two hours late, and was to reach Rome. But the Volotea flight was cut short, since 20 minutes after takeoff, the pilot decided to turn around, says Capital. At issue was an altercation between staff and a passenger, which had to be turned over to local authorities. The latter, accompanied by two young children, refused to follow the safety instructions, and would have been aggressive.

The passenger was traveling with two particularly agitated children aged 2 and 4, according to the testimonies of the crew. However, despite the repeated requests of the air hostesses, she would have refused to make them sit down and to fasten their seatbelts. Annoyed by their insistence, she even threw her mobile phone at one of the hostesses.

Informed of the altercation by the personnel of the plane, the pilot quickly resolved to turn around and land the plane in Sardinia. Back in Olbia, the recalcitrant passenger was handed over to the authorities, who conducted a rapid investigation. But as crew members reported her violent behavior towards them, she challenged their version. She even denied throwing her phone away, saying she accidentally let it slip.
