You’re tired and still can’t sleep: The causes of insomnia can be conflicts and being overwhelmed at work and in your private life. The coronavirus pandemic has only made the situation worse.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – In Baden-Württemberg there are more and more people who suffer from sleep disorders. This results in data from the KKH commercial health insurance company. The number of diagnoses of non-organic sleep disorders rose by more than 90 percent from 2011 to 2021, according to a statement on Wednesday in Stuttgart.

From the pre-Corona year 2019 to the second Corona year 2021, the KKH in the southwest alone recorded an increase of almost 14 percent. Most recently, around 180,000 people were affected. This is one of the top values ????in the federal state comparison. Only in Saxony and Thuringia was there an even stronger increase during the pandemic. Nationwide, around 1.2 million people were recently affected, as a KKH projection shows. According to the KKH, the time change next weekend will primarily affect people with sleep disorders.

According to the KKH, sleep disorders that are not organically caused include problems falling asleep and staying asleep, as well as nightmares and anxiety disorders that can arise under high levels of psychological stress. According to the announcement, the evaluation is based on medical diagnoses. The number of people with insomnia is likely to be much higher, said KKH doctor Sonja Hermeneit.

Causes of restlessness at night can include conflicts and excessive demands at work and in private life, traumatic or stressful events such as the major changes caused by the corona pandemic and the energy crisis. Permanent insomnia and regular sleep deprivation could damage your health. “This increases, for example, the susceptibility to infections and the risk of depression and anxiety disorders or cardiovascular diseases,” said Hermeneit.
