Munich/Augsburg (dpa/lby) – The Munich corona expert Clemens Wendtner has spoken out in favor of a mask requirement indoors and in schools. The omicron variants of the virus are “not as harmless as is repeatedly portrayed,” he told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Friday edition). About half of the Covid 19 patients in his clinic, the Munich Clinic Schwabing, “came to us exclusively because of Corona and these patients have massive problems, for example with their lungs or they suffer from heart muscle inflammation”.
Wendtner also spoke out in favor of a mask requirement indoors. “Relying on voluntariness here is of little use. We see that at many events, for example: anyone who wears a mask is currently treated almost like a leper. In fact, those who don’t wear a mask don’t show solidarity.” It doesn’t always have to be an FFP2 mask: “I would be happy if everyone indoors would wear a surgical mask properly again.”
A mask requirement is also needed in schools again, said the doctor. From the fifth grade, this is reasonable protection for students and teachers. “I’m afraid we have to assume that this will be another tough autumn,” Wendtner told the newspaper. “Maybe even tougher than the previous one.”
