Ulm (dpa / lsw) – Because of the continuing influx of refugees, especially from Ukraine, the city of Ulm is considering occupying sports halls and setting up containers. If the same number of refugees arrive in Ulm in the next few weeks as in the past, the city will need additional accommodation for short and medium-term accommodation, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday.
“We know very well that many who had to cut back on sport because of the pandemic would have to do it again – which we want to avoid for as long as possible,” said Mayor Iris Mann, who is responsible for sports. Nevertheless, one is obliged to do so and at the same time sees it as a commandment of humanity to reach out a hand to those who have fled war and hardship, according to Mann. Up to 50 refugees are currently arriving in Ulm every week. Around 2000 people are currently housed in municipal accommodation.
