Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – The beekeepers in Hesse have harvested significantly more honey this year. Each colony of bees produced an average of 41.5 kilograms and thus around 13.8 kilograms more than in the rainy previous year, as the specialist center for bees and beekeeping announced at the request of the German Press Agency. Accordingly, the so-called summer costume came to 17.4 kilograms (2021: 11.5 kilograms). The early forage yielded 24.1 kilos per colony (2021: 16.2 kilos). “As initially feared, the widespread drought had no negative impact on the harvest,” said the head of the specialist center, Christoph Otten.

606 beekeepers from all over Hesse took part in the harvest survey conducted by the specialist center in cooperation with the German Beekeepers’ Association. The stated harvest value refers to the beekeepers who actually harvested. Some beekeepers leave the honey in the beehive so that the animals can use it themselves. Beekeepers call their harvest Tracht.
