Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi has granted a pardon to Ahmed Douma, an opposition figure in Egypt, several lawyers announced on Saturday August 19. Mr. Douma, symbol of the 2011 revolution, had been serving a fifteen-year prison sentence since 2013 for violence during demonstrations.
He was granted “a presidential pardon,” said Tarek Elawady, a lawyer on the presidential pardons committee. Khaled Ali, a human rights lawyer, announced for his part “waiting for the release of [Ahmed] Douma” by filming himself outside the prison where he is serving his sentence.
Mr. Douma had been sentenced alongside hundreds of other activists; all were accused of taking part in clashes between security forces and demonstrators outside the government headquarters in Cairo in December 2011, killing eighteen people.
