Stralsund (dpa/mv) – The federal government is funding the renovation of the Stralsund sailing training ship “Gorch Fock 1” with around 13.5 million euros. The money should flow into the basic renovation and the construction of the accessible, barrier-free museum ship, said the member of the Bundestag responsible for Stralsund, Anna Kassautzki (SPD) on Thursday. The FDP member of the Bundestag, Hagen Reinhold, called the funding a gain for the city of Stralsund and an appreciation of shipping.
In the past, the city had estimated the need for basic work, for example to ensure buoyancy and safety, at 10.6 million euros. According to previous plans, she wants to buy the ship. Accordingly, the refurbishment is to be financed with funds that have already been promised. The association should raise its own share from the purchase price; he should continue to operate the ship.
In the past, the association had spoken of costs of 22 million euros. According to the city, however, this includes further work, for example to make the ship sailable again in the long term.
The more than 80 meter long barque was built in Hamburg in 1933 and sailed under the German, Soviet and Ukrainian flags before returning to Stralsund in 2003.
According to Kassautzki, the 13.5 million euros from the federal government come from the Kulturinvest project, with which the federal government is funding investments in cultural institutions with 40 million euros this year.
