Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) – GEW boss Thilo Hartmann has accused Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) of having given no impetus to the Hessian education system since taking office. “But that would be urgently needed, because after all, over a million children, adolescents, young adults and their parents are directly affected,” said the state chairman of the Education and Science Union (GEW) of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden.
The prime minister should not leave the responsibility for solving the immense problems to the individual responsible ministers alone. In addition, significantly more funds are required for education in the state budget. “Unfortunately, Boris Rhein – like his predecessor Volker Bouffier – seems to lack the political will to change anything,” criticized the trade unionist on the occasion of Rhein’s 100-day balance sheet.
The Hessian education system is confronted with more and more problems, from the day-care center to the universities. There is a shortage of skilled workers in all pedagogical professions. The consequences of the corona pandemic are still having an effect. Because of the war in Ukraine, the educational institutions had taken in more refugees than ever before, Hartmann warned. Cold classrooms and closed lecture halls threatened due to the energy crisis. In addition, there are the long-established construction sites, such as the often dilapidated school buildings.
