Football bereaved by a new drama near a stadium. A Greek supporter of football club AEK Athens was stabbed to death on the night of Monday August 7 to Tuesday August 8 during a brawl with supporters of Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb, according to Greek police.

Before the first leg of the Champions League to be played on Tuesday at the AEK stadium in Nea Filadelfia on the outskirts of Athens, violent clashes between groups of ultras left at least six injured. The stabbed 22-year-old was taken to an Athens hospital before succumbing to his injuries overnight Monday to Tuesday, Greek police report.

“Serious incidents took place outside the Nea Filadelfia stadium. A stabbed young Greek man is dead and six other injured people are still in hospital, “reported the Greek police, who made 83 arrests after the violent clashes between the ultras of the two clubs. Those arrested are to be heard by the prosecutor on Tuesday morning, according to the Greek news agency Ana.

Around 100 hooligans from the Croatian club were present in the Greek capital, Ana noted. On the night of February 1, 2022, in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, Alkis Kampanos, a young supporter, was beaten and stabbed to death after a football match between PAOK FC and Aris FC. Last July, seven of the defendants in this case were found guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced to life in prison.
