Halberstadt (dpa/sa) – The General German Bicycle Club has criticized the expansion of the cycling infrastructure in Saxony-Anhalt as insufficient. The cities in the state almost always only get sufficient school grades in the annual bicycle climate test, said state chairman Martin Hoffmann at the state assembly at the weekend in Halberstadt. And there is no improvement in sight. Cycling currently ensures people’s mobility and thus social participation. Even more people are willing to leave the car with the expensive fuel “if the bike paths are safe and comfortable”. This also applies to rural areas.
As examples of the inadequate treatment of cycling in the country, Hoffmann named the road safety work and generally the implementation of the amended road traffic regulations. Many motorists still did not overtake with the required distance.
“The authorities are required to inform and control!” Cycling has to be fun, said Hoffmann. “If the infrastructure is right, the fun comes naturally. Creating these conditions is an obligation.”
