The municipal police of the Navarrese town of Estella intervened today to prevent an EH Bildu councilor from placing an ikurriña, the official flag of the Basque Country, on the town hall balcony. The moment of tension occurred during the act of launching the rocket that marked the beginning of the municipal festivities.

It is about the mayor Elisabet Ciordia, who was released in this legislature, whom the chief of the Estella police, Rodrigo García, has caught on the air despite his resistance.

As the images published by EH Bildu through her Twitter account show, while she continued to vigorously wave the flag, she was removed from the balcony of the town hall and taken inside the building.

The ‘Abertzale’ formation has lamented that “these events once again show the way forward: it is time to respect the right to freedom of expression”.

Similarly, its parliamentary spokesperson, Laura Aznal, has also spoken out to show her “support for councilor Elisabet Ciordia” since she considers “this type of behavior by the Municipal Police unacceptable. It is time to definitively overcome the struggle between symbols and respect freedom of expression”.
