Chemnitz (dpa / sn) – According to a new calculation, the city of Chemnitz will continue to lose residents in the coming years. However, it is uncertain how much Saxony’s third largest city will shrink. Various variants assume a population of between 227,500 and 242,500 in 2035, as the city informed on Thursday based on its new population projection. According to the information, there were 243,646 people at the end of 2021.

A major reason for the population decline is that due to the high average age, more residents die than are born. From 2016 to 2019, an average of 1,000 more people died than were born. The situation has worsened with the higher mortality rate due to the corona pandemic, it said. Last year there were 2,072 births and 4,034 deaths.
