The terrorist group Islamic State (IS) announced on Thursday the death of its leader, Abu al Hussein al Husseini al Qurashi, appointed in November 2022, and designated Abu Hafs al Hashimi al Qurashi as the new ‘caliph’, according to an audio broadcast by the audiovisual production company Al Furqan, related to the jihadists.
“We express the condolences of (…) the soldiers of the Islamic State on the death of the caliph of the believers, Abu al Hussein al Husseini al Qurashi,” IS spokesman Abu Huzaifa al Ansari said in the audio.
According to AFP, Al-Qurashi “died after a direct confrontation” with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, former local arm of the Al Qaida network) formation, which was trying to capture him in a town in the Syrian province of Idlib, said his spokesperson on the Telegram messaging network, without specifying the exact place or date of the incident.
