Gießen (dpa/lhe) – Several helpers of the Eritrean culture festival in Gießen’s Hessenhalle were attacked and injured on Saturday evening. The attackers were participants in a meeting against the culture festival, according to the Gießen police.
According to the police, a previously unknown number of demonstrators left the demo train at the Hessenhalle. They climbed over the fence of the hall and then attacked the festival workers with iron bars, batons and knives. The police officers who were summoned were thrown at with stones.
In addition to the festival helpers, a few police officers were also slightly injured. How many people were injured and how serious the injuries are, the police could not say for sure on Saturday evening. The culture festival was canceled by police order, and the counter-demonstration was ended by the organizer after the incident.
