Rostock (dpa/mv) – The AfD has nominated Michael Meister, a member of the state parliament, as a candidate for the mayoral election in the Hanseatic city in November. The party announced that the 48-year-old, who was born in Rostock, was elected on Saturday with 83 percent of the votes. Meister is a former police officer and was elected to the state parliament for Rostock in the autumn.
A new mayor will be elected in Rostock on November 13th. The previous incumbent, Claus Ruhe Madsen, moved to Schleswig-Holstein in June as Economics Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU). Should a runoff election become necessary, this is scheduled for November 27th.
