Rostock (dpa/mv) – As expected, the district associations of the CDU and FDP in Rostock nominated senior police officer Michael Ebert as the candidate for the mayoral election in the Hanseatic city at separate small party conferences. The corresponding decisions were made unanimously on Friday evening. The electoral alliance “Independent Citizens for Rostock” (UFR) had also come out in favor of the non-party Ebert.
“I am very pleased that in Michael Ebert we have found a very likeable candidate with experience and vision, who has convinced the CDU and UFR just as much as we have,” said FDP district chairwoman Julia Kristin Pittasch.
Three female candidates had previously been nominated for the post: The Greens are in the running for the top post in Rostock Town Hall with Claudia Müller, Member of the Bundestag and Federal Government Coordinator for Maritime Economy and Tourism. The left nominated the member of parliament Eva-Maria Kröger and the board of the Rostock SPD recommended the head of the state building and real estate office in Rostock, Carmen-Alina Botezatu, as a candidate.
A new mayor will be elected in Rostock on November 13th. The previous incumbent, Claus Ruhe Madsen, moved to Schleswig-Holstein in June as Economics Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU). Should a runoff election become necessary, this is scheduled for November 27th.
