US President Joe Biden has chosen Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the US Navy, a choice that, if confirmed, would make her the first woman to lead that division and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Biden has indicated in a statement released by the White House that, as the next head of Naval Operations, Franchetti will contribute 38 years of dedicated service to the nation.
“Throughout her career, she has demonstrated extensive experience in both the operational and policy fields. She was the second woman to reach the rank of four-star admiral in the United States Navy and, when confirmed, she will make history again as the first woman to serve as Chief of Naval Operations and on the Joint Chiefs of Staff,” said that note.
The appointment of the president must pass the approval of the Senate, where the Democrats have held 48 seats since last January, the Republicans 49 and there are three other independents with a progressive tendency.
Franchetti was born 59 years ago in Rochester (New York). She assumed the position of Deputy Chief of Naval Operations in September 2022 and her past positions have included Commander of the US Naval Forces in Korea, Deputy Commander of those forces in Europe and Africa or Director of Strategy, Plans and Policies of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Franchetti will succeed Admiral Michael Gilday, appointed in August 2019.
