Hanau (dpa/lhe) – On the site of the former Großauheim barracks, the planned ultra-modern data center campus is to take shape in the coming years. The logistics real estate developer P3 Logistic Parks presented the plans on Thursday in Hanau. The company took over the former barracks from the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks and will now develop the P3 Datacenter Hanau on the 250,000 square meter site. Climate protection and energy efficiency should play a central role, as the company emphasized. The campus will be built and operated sustainably and supplied with 100 percent green electricity.

“The e-commerce boom and increasing teleworking are making it ever clearer how important data centers are for all of us,” explained Sönke Kewitz, Managing Director of P3 Logistic Parks Germany. “Without them, progressive digitization is not possible and the need to meet this demand with a green alternative is enormous”. Hanau’s Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky (SPD) added: “For us, the development of the former Großauheim barracks into a data center campus that is very large by international standards represents the heart of the implementation of our data center strategy.”

The construction of the campus is planned in several phases, with at least eight modules with a building area of ??around 200,000 square meters being built over a period of ten years. Before that, the site of the Großauheim barracks, which has been empty since 2008, will be decontaminated and the building stock will be demolished and recycled. That work began earlier this week, a company spokeswoman said. Species protection measures such as the establishment of compensation areas and the resettlement of animals in need of protection are also planned.

A connection capacity of 180 megawatts is planned for the data center campus. Goals for sustainable operation were agreed. The P3 data center is said to be fully supplied with electricity from renewable energies as soon as the first module is commissioned.
