Rostock/Stralsund (dpa/mv) – The Rostock police are investigating a couple who posed as police officers for months and who is said to have cheated seniors out of around 65,000 euros. As a spokesman for the responsible public prosecutor’s office in Stralsund said on Monday, it is being checked whether the 43-year-old and her 32-year-old suspected accomplice were part of a larger organization and could be considered for further scams. The suspects had been investigated since the end of 2021. They are already in custody and have so far been silent on the allegations, as it was said.
During searches in Rostock, a number of pieces of evidence and bank cards were found by victims, and accounts were also seized. The suspects’ ploy involved calling senior citizens and telling them that Romanian gangs were on the move. Police officers would come by and take their cash and debit cards into custody. When the danger is over, they would get their things back.
This scam worked in a number of cases in the Schwerin, Anklam and Neubrandenburg regions. There were also victims in Schwaan and in and around Rostock. According to the Stralsund public prosecutor’s office, the suspects were also identified by surveillance camera footage from their clothing, which the victims had described.
