Bus check with consequences: A driverless bus rolls into a house on a sloping road. The driver had looked for a door defect. The police noted 18 injured.
Heidelberg (dpa / lsw) – 18 people were injured in a bus accident in Heidelberg on Wednesday. According to the police, a seriously injured person was flown to a clinic by helicopter. Eight injured people were taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance. According to initial investigations, the driver of the bus got out of the vehicle because of a defect in a rear door. The bus started moving on the sloping road for unknown reasons. After a few meters of driving without a driver, the bus drove first against a wall and then into a house wall.
The front of the vehicle dug into the wall. A parked small car was completely demolished and pushed against the wall. At least one other car was damaged. The extent of the damage could not initially be estimated.
The police, fire brigade and rescue services took care of the passengers. A rescue helicopter was also deployed. It was not immediately known how many passengers were on the bus.
Because of the accident, the L596 between Wilhelmsfeld and Heidelberg-Ziegelhausen was completely closed all afternoon. The police asked locals to drive around the area. The accident investigation dragged on for hours. An accident expert was called in. According to the fire brigade, an expert should also check the building statics.
