Northern Ireland politicians have been reacting positively to the resignations of Boris Johnson’s cabinet.

The chancellor, and the health secretary, have resigned from the government because they don’t trust the prime minister to lead the country.

Rishi Sunak, Chancellor, stated that the public expects government to be run “properly”, competently and with seriousness.

Sajid Javid, Health Secretary, echoed these sentiments, claiming that the government wasn’t “acting in national interest”.

They were replaced by Steve Barclay, who is now the health secretary, and Nadhim Zahawi, who is the chancellor.

Ms O’Neill stated that Boris Johnson was “bad for people in the north”.

She said, “He has failed workers as well as their families who struggle to pay the cost of living.”

She said, “He has failed victims and their families in the conflict.”

“He delivered the most difficult Brexit against the wishes of our people, our politicians and our businesses. He has torn up international accords and shown contempt towards international law.

“He attacked the Good Friday Agreement and supported the boycott of our democratic institutions in an attempt to keep power.

“The Tory chaos at Westminster right now is a daily reminder about the total ineptitude of this British government.”

Sir Jeffrey didn’t comment on the news directly, but he described the Conservative Party’s leadership as well as “those who hold cabinet positions” in the context of a party matter.

He stated that “our focus remains on working towards the removal of the Irish Sea frontier brought about by the NI Protocol.”

This protocol is part of the 2019 Brexit agreement and keeps Northern Ireland within the EU’s single marketplace for goods. It prevents a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“Everyday it remains, it is undermining both our economy and Constitution.” He stated that not one MLA or MP from the union supports the protocol.

“The legislation is making its legislative journey through Parliament is important in seeing removal of the protocol. It is also necessary if we want to see solid foundations on which to re-establish a devolved government within NI.”

BBC News NI interviewed Mr Farry. He said that he never believed Boris Johnson was fit for prime minister, but that events have proved me and countless other right. He has really dragged down standards in public office as well as the norms of democracy here in the UK.

“I believe he must go.

He should have gone long ago, but tonight I believe it is inexorable that he must go quickly.

The prime minister was described by Mr Eastwood as an “absolute disaster for Northern Ireland”

He told BBC News NI that he was breaking international law regarding the protocol.

“He is violating international law regarding the legacy proposals.

“He wants to get us out of the ECHR. He doesn’t care what happens to Northern Ireland or the Good Friday Agreement.

“The sooner he gets out, the better.”
