Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – So far, more than 24,900 war refugees from Ukraine have been admitted to Saxony-Anhalt’s administrative districts and urban districts. Among them are at least 2,636 children of kindergarten age and 6,265 children of school age, the Ministry of the Interior announced on Monday in Magdeburg. The federal government of Saxony-Anhalt is currently not allocating any more Ukrainian refugees.

In the first few weeks after the start of the war, the country took in more people than the nationwide distribution key would have allowed for. However, refugees continue to arrive every day, mostly on private initiative. The numbers are usually in the middle or upper double digits.

As a result, the state closed an interim accommodation in a hotel in Merseburg on June 30 because it is no longer needed. However, a hotel in Halberstadt will remain as an opportunity to take in Ukrainian refugees at short notice who cannot be immediately distributed to the municipalities.
