Spechbach (dpa / lsw) – The death of a two-year-old in a garden pond was not the result of a lack of due diligence on the part of the parents, but a tragic accident. The police said on Tuesday after initial investigations that the owner of the water in Spechbach (Rhein-Neckar district) was also not to blame.
The child had left the house early on Saturday morning, despite child-friendly protective measures such as bars, unnoticed by the still sleeping parents. From there the boy walked a few hundred meters and ended up in the garden of a residential building. The child was later found dead in the garden pond.
When the family noticed the son’s disappearance, they called the police and, with the help of the entire community and rescue workers, started a search operation, which was supported by a helicopter. A local resident found the child lifeless in the pond.
