Grimma (dpa/sn) – After a forest fire in Klosterholz near Grimma, the fire brigade is fighting to destroy embers. A fire broke out in the forest on Sunday afternoon, which spread to about three hectares of forest, as the city of Grimma announced on Monday. During the night of Monday, embers flared up again and again. After 24 hours, there were still smoldering spots, some of which were underground. “The embers are localized by the thermal imaging camera, excavated and extinguished square by square meter by an excavator,” said Matthias Berger (independent), Mayor of Grimma.
Due to the drought and the proclaimed forest fire level, it is now particularly important to be careful with fire. “Because more than half of all forest fires are caused by negligence and could be avoided. If smoke or a fire is detected, 112 should be called immediately,” said Berger. Around 150 emergency services from several fire brigades and civil protection units were deployed. The cause of fire was unclear for the moment.
