In the basketball final series, Bayern see it 0-1 against defending champion Alba Berlin. The defeat at the start can be explained quite simply for the Munich team.
Berlin (dpa / lby) – In the end it was a pure question of strength and not a question of master maturity. After the 73:86 (43:40) in the first final for the German basketball title, the explanation for the false start in the playoff series over a maximum of five games for the loser FC Bayern was relatively simple. Only 48 hours after reaching the final, the Munich team simply lacked the necessary energy in the final phase on Friday evening in Berlin. “We ran out of strength. First physically and then mentally. Berlin was better, but only in the last quarter,” said Bayern coach Andrea Trinchieri.
By the time of the second meeting this Tuesday in Munich’s Audi Dome, the Bayern goalkeeper’s energy stores should be replenished to such an extent that there will be no further drop in performance at the end of the game. The weekend should be used with a day off “to recharge”, as Trinchieri emphasized. The aim is to “prepare the best possible performance” for game two, said the Italian. The team that achieves three wins first wins the title.
In a fast-paced game in the Berlin Arena that was balanced over three quarters with many three-point hits, Yovel Zoosman with 14 points for Alba and Andreas Obst for Bayern with 17 points were the most successful shooters. In the new edition of last year’s final, Bayern acted absolutely on an equal footing with the hosts. “In the end we gave up the game,” commented national player Obst. As a point of criticism, he addressed “a lot of ball losses”, which gave the rested Berliners the opportunity to score numerous easy points, especially in the last quarter.
“We just have to be smarter in our heads and play the game to the end,” said Obst looking ahead: “The goal for the second game? Win!”
Trinchieri was annoyed: “We controlled the game well for 33, 34 minutes before we ran out of strength.” From his point of view, the Italian named the reasons for the defeat: “We didn’t control the rebounds and were really weak on defense. Alba hit 15 three-pointers, so it’s almost impossible to win away from home.”
