Kyiv has a commitment from the federal government for anti-aircraft tanks, mortars and self-propelled howitzers. Chancellor Scholz expects a “rapid” delivery. According to a report, a number of other weapons arrived in Ukraine.
According to a report, Germany has delivered more weapons to Ukraine. In the past two weeks, 2,450 RGW 90 anti-tank handguns, also known as “Matador”, 1,600 DM22 anti-tank directional mines and 3,000 DM31 anti-tank mines have arrived in Ukraine, the “Spiegel” reported. The weapons have already been distributed within the Ukrainian army.
The deliveries had been confirmed by Ukrainian government circles, the magazine continued. There is still no comment from the federal government. According to “Spiegel”, Ukraine had ordered and paid for the Matador anti-tank weapons directly from the German manufacturer. The mines, on the other hand, “apparently” came from Bundeswehr stocks.
The Union, among others, has repeatedly accused the federal government of being too cautious when it comes to arms deliveries to Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized on Monday’s “RTL Direkt” program that Germany would continue to supply arms to Ukraine. He expects the promised Gepard anti-aircraft tanks to be made available “relatively quickly”. However, he pointed out that ammunition was still being sought abroad. The Gepard tanks are the first heavy weapons the federal government has approved for Ukraine. In addition, self-propelled howitzers and mortars are to be delivered.
No decision has yet been made on other offers from the industry, such as Marder armored personnel carriers or Leopard battle tanks. However, Scholz also reiterated that he would not make any decision that would lead to a direct conflict between NATO and Russia. He again rejected a no-fly zone that would require the use of fighter jets. That would mean NATO entering the war, he said as justification.
