The former Socialist Prime Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, assured Monday that he “would take his responsibilities if the conditions are met” in the presidential election of 2027 after the launch in Créteil of his movement La Convention, which wants to spearhead the anti-Mélenchon left.
“If your question is: will you take your responsibilities if the conditions are met so that this movement can, together with other forces of the left, create the conditions for hope? The answer is yes, I have it said very clearly”, insisted on France Inter the former Minister of the Interior of François Hollande, who was present on Saturday at the launch meeting.
“If the conditions had been met and if I had felt the possibility of support from the (socialist) party, I would have taken my responsibilities” from the presidential election of 2022, he also assured.
Mr. Cazeneuve left the PS last year after the agreement establishing the Nupes.
Mr. Cazeneuve accused Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the PS, re-elected with “fraud at every street corner”, of having “created the conditions for the fracturing of his party into a thousand pieces” and reproached him for l to have “dealt with all the names of birds”.
According to the former head of government, “we must create the conditions: 1) credibility, 2) the unity of the country”.
“There will be no unity of the left in the division of the country. And if each theme that the Nupes convenes, is a theme that fractures the country, there will be neither unity of the left, nor unity of the country. And the only unity that we will manage to achieve is that of the extreme right and the extreme right, for the greatest misfortune of our Nation”, he warned.
The former mayor of Cherbourg also reiterated his opposition to Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform, which he deemed “unfair”. He criticized the “techno-verticality” of the Head of State’s governance, “which lowers everything”, with a “Parliament which is no more than a theater of shadows” and a “government which is not more than a group of servile collaborators”.
Pierre Jouvet, secretary general of the PS and close to Olivier Faure, lamented on Twitter that the only time Bernard Cazeneuve “finds a little voice is to vomit his contempt and his bitterness on the socialist party and the rest of the left,” he added.
“Knocking constantly on your own camp does not make a program”, also replied another close friend of Olivier Faure, the president of the Departmental Council of Haute-Garonne Sébastien Vincini, stressing that in 2017 when the PS collapsed, “only the Olivier Faure generation had the courage to assume the right of inventory and to find the path of the unity of the left”.
In another tweet, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of the Insoumis recalled that a year ago, “La Nupes won the first round of the legislative election”. “At a time when Holland is back to divide us, let’s be united,” he pleaded.
